10 Evidence-Based Tips for Back Pain
Most back pain is not serious and gets better with the right self-care. These tips from the Top Pro Rehab physiotherapy team are based on international clinical guidelines.
Tip 1: Stay active. Bed rest slows recovery. Keep doing gentle everyday activities and walking, even if you move a little slower at first.
Tip 2: Most new low back pain improves within a few weeks. X-rays and scans are rarely needed unless your doctor or physiotherapist finds warning signs.
Tip 3: Exercise is the best-proven treatment. Walking, stretching, strengthening, yoga or swimming all help, so choose the one you enjoy and will keep doing.
Tip 4: A warm (not hot) pack for 15 to 20 minutes can ease muscle spasm. Always wrap it in a cloth to protect your skin.
Tip 5: When lifting, keep the object close to your body, bend at your hips and knees, and avoid twisting while you lift.
Tip 6: If you sit for long periods, change position or stand up and walk every 30 to 45 minutes.
Tip 7: There is no single best sleeping position. Use a pillow between your knees when lying on your side, or under your knees when lying on your back, if it eases the pain.
Tip 8: Try to keep working and doing your usual duties, with small adjustments if needed. Staying at your normal routine helps recovery.
Tip 9: Worry, stress, poor sleep and fear of movement can make pain feel worse. Moving with confidence is safe and helps your back recover.
Tip 10: Seek urgent medical help if you have numbness around your groin or buttocks, loss of bladder or bowel control, weakness in your legs, fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain after a major fall or accident.
