10 Tips for a Healthy Neck, Shoulders and Posture
Neck and shoulder pain is very common, especially with long hours on phones and computers. Most of it settles with simple, safe self-care. These tips from the Top Pro Rehab physiotherapy team are based on clinical guidelines and research.
Tip 11: Set your screen so the top of it is at or just below eye level, about an arm's length away.
Tip 12: Hold your phone closer to eye level instead of bending your head down for long periods, and take regular breaks.
Tip 13: Gentle neck movements help stiffness. Slowly turn your head side to side and do chin tucks, about 10 times, a few times a day, within comfort.
Tip 14: Squeeze your shoulder blades gently back and down, hold for 5 seconds, and repeat 10 times to keep your upper back active.
Tip 15: There is no single perfect posture. The best posture is the next one, so change position often.
Tip 16: Choose a pillow height that keeps your neck in line with the rest of your spine when you lie down.
Tip 17: Carry bags on both shoulders or use a backpack. For school children, keep the bag light and use both straps.
Tip 18: At a desk, keep your feet flat, your back supported and your elbows bent at about a right angle.
Tip 19: Most neck pain improves within a few weeks with gentle activity and exercise. Avoid long periods of rest or wearing a collar unless advised.
Tip 20: Seek urgent medical help for neck pain after an accident or fall, or with weakness or numbness in the arms, a severe headache, fever, dizziness or difficulty walking.
